Red Lake school shooting: How you can help
Chippewas in shock, mourning after teen goes on rampage
"... A fund has been established for relatives of the victims in Monday’s horrific school shooting that killed at least ten people and wounded 14 others on the Red Lake Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota. The Red Lake Reservation has 5,162 residents and all but 91 are Native Americans. Even though the tribe operates a few gaming enterprises, there are a disproportionate number of people living in poverty on the reservation.
The shooting has reverberated in Indian Country...
... Leah Perkins of the tribe’s Crisis Center said that any donations or care packages would be welcome.

Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Donates Over $10Million
Prior Lake, MN - The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community released its annual donation report, Indian Gaming: Working for Indian People and Minnesota. "As Dakota people, we have a long tradition of sharing with others in need so it is important for us to give back tot he larger community. Before Indian gaming, our Community lived on dirt roads and many of us struggled to survie. Now we are able to help others," said SMSC Chairman Stanley R. Crooks.
The 24-page report details $10,278,792 in charitable giving made by the Community in fiscal year 2004 to Indian tribes, education and youth programs, and charitable organizations. Some of these donations are highlighted below.
Indian Gaming: Working for Indian People and Minnesota details economic development grants to 15 Tribal nations, five of which are in Minnesota. A donation of $1 million to the Grand Portage Band of Chippewa financed construction of a trading post, convenience store, and restaurant. A donation of $500,000 to the Red Lake Band of Chippewa financed extensive renovations to a grade school on the reservation. A donation of $500,000 to the Leech Lake Band of Chippewa paid for a well drilling truck to enable the Band to drill their own wells. The SMSC also made donations of $1 million each to the Lower Sioux Community (MN), the Upper Sioux Community (MN), the Santee Sioux Nation (NE), and the Yankton Sioux Tribe (SD). SMSC donations funded a multi-year housing project for the Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe in North Dakota. “Without the financial assistance of the SMSC, this project would not have gone forward.” Wrote Carl Walking Eagle, Crow Hill District Representative for the Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe.
SMSC donations also helped fund a buffalo ranch, popcorn farm, and visitor’s center for the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe (SD), and a feasibility study and bed license for elder care for the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe (ND). More SMSC Donation Information

Indian education bill survives committee
By JARED MILLER
Tribune Capitol Bureau HELENA — American Indian lawmakers won a major victory six years ago when they helped pass the Indian Education for All Act, requiring schools to incorporate Indian culture and heritage in all Montana classrooms. Some of the same people are now asking the Legislature to put some money behind the law so schools can train teachers, develop curriculum and buy supplies...
