NASA
grant helps teach kids from tribal schools about space
and science
By GAIL
SCHONTZLER , Chronicle Staff Writer, The Bozeman Daily
Chronicle, MT
...This is the first year for the space camp, which was
made possible by a NASA grant to Salish
Kootenai College. Tim Olson, who teaches physics and
engineering there, worked with two MSU assistant professors
of physics, Charles Kankelborg and David McKenzie, to
launch the camp.
The NASA program works with historically black, Hispanic
and tribal colleges to promote an interest in space and
science among minority students. The colleges receive
three-year grants of to $275,000.
The 50 teens, many wearing colorful NASA T-shirts, came
from Montana's Mission Valley and schools on the Flathead
Reservation.
"We hope a few will end up as engineers or scientists,"
Kankelborg said...

Indian children learn their history
By:
ADRIENNE A. AGUIRRE - Staff Writer, NCTimes.com, CA
SAN PASQUAL INDIAN RESERVATION ---- Growing up on the
reservation, life wasn't easy for Shanta Chaloux. Now
a college graduate, he hopes to prepare the path to
success for other American Indians while preserving
their culture...
The
center he helped build fosters positive youth development,
parent involvement, computer training, sports and fitness,
tutoring, and cultural pride and preservation. Children
learn about the contributions their ancestors made to
the country and other truths they may not get in school.
"We come from a good people ... It's something to be
proud of," Chaloux said. "We can't buy into the stereotypes."

By LaNell Shirley, Special to the Times,
The Navajo Times Online, AZ
PHOENIX
- The city of Phoenix is not a place you would expect
to find Navajo language classes, but the Indian Center
is planning to expand its classes to include children
in August.
The Phoenix Indian Center has seen a rise in popularity
among the urban Navajo community. In 2000, the center
expanded its services to include Navajo language and
culture classes that are offered throughout the year.
With recent funding from the Navajo Nation and several
grants, the center's education department has employed
four permanent staff - cultural specialist Freddie Johnson,
language instructor Rachel Antonio, elder assistant
Richard Beyal, and education specialist David Frazier...

THE OLYMPIAN, WA
NISQUALLY
RESERVATION -- Thirty years ago, Dr. Freida Eng was
a teenage bookworm and an aspiring artist. Now she buys
art materials when the work of running the Nisqually
Tribal Health Clinic gets a little frustrating. "I have
this urge to be creative every once in a while," Eng
said. But the good doctor rarely completes an art project.
There are just too many other things to do.Last month,
the clinic offered examinations for breast and cervical
cancers using mobile screening equipment. Eng's focus
is on preventive care, and she uses incentives such
as door prizes, food and massages to attract people
to health screening events, such as well-child
clinics and men's health clinics...

a red flag for community leaders, who say they want
the largest undeveloped residential lot in the northeast

American
Indian Movement (A.I.M.) First Gathering June 27, 2004
San Diego
, CA : On 27 June, the San Diego Chapter of the American
Indian Movement (A.I.M.) held their initial gathering
in Ramona , California.
This was the first gathering since the former radical
leadership was removed from the San Diego chapter a
few years ago. Joseph Red Bear a Hunkpapa Lakota from
Bull Head, South Dakota has assumed the role of chapter
President. As a young boy, he participated in the Wounded
Knee standoff in 1973 and the Trails of Tears cross
country march to Washington , D.C. Joseph spoke of positive
activism, not negative radicalism referring to how the
organization has changed. He spoke further of promoting
a new positive supportive role for AIM in Indian country
and wanting to shake off the old radical image. The
new motto for AIM San Diego will be 'Indian-helping-Indian."
AIM San Diego will organize to assist the 17 reservation
and over 30,000 urban Indians in San Diego county.
The large AIM Gathering consisted of Indians from San
Diego reservations and urban areas, including Indians
from many regions of north America... For further information
